Why film goes on the outside
Most film goes on the inside of the glass. In some cases, such as certain glass or surfaces, the inside is not suitable, so a film made for the weather goes on the outside instead.
Exterior film is built to face sun, rain and cleaning, so it is made differently from interior film.

How it is made
Inside a ThermaCore Exterior film
Exterior film uses weather-resistant, UV-stable polyester with a harder outer coating and an adhesive designed for outside conditions, so it can face sun, rain and temperature swings.
Window film starts as optical-grade polyester (PET), a clear plastic made in very thin, even sheets. Coatings are added in layers: dyes or ceramic particles, thin metal or metal-oxide layers applied in vacuum chambers, and a scratch-resistant hard coat. A pressure-sensitive adhesive and a protective liner go on the other side. The layers are laminated and cured, then slit into rolls and checked for clarity, coating evenness and defects before they ship.

Numbers that matter when you compare
Visible light
VLT is the share of visible light that passes through. Higher is clearer and brighter. Ask for the exterior-rated warranty and the glass types it is approved for.
Total solar energy rejected
TSER shows how much of the sun’s total energy the film blocks, including heat. Exterior film is exposed to weather, so ask about expected lifespan and care.
UV rejection
The share of ultraviolet rays blocked, which affects fading of floors, furniture and art.
Solar heat gain
Lower SHGC means less solar heat enters the room. It applies to the whole window, so ask for the film-on-glass value.
Glass compatibility
Film suits some glass better than others. We check your glass type and any maker restrictions before we quote.

Why would film go outside?
Some glass, such as double or triple glazing with certain coatings, is not suited to inside film. Exterior film can solve that.
Does it last outdoors?
It is built for it, but exposure ages film faster than inside use. Ask for the warranty terms.
