What “metallic reflective” means

A thin layer of metal is bonded into the film. The metal reflects light, which is what gives the mirror-like look from outside in daylight, and it helps reduce the sun’s energy reaching the room.

The same metal can affect cell, GPS and Wi-Fi signals, and it changes how the window looks from both sides, so it is not the right film for everyone.

How we handle it

  1. Tell us your goal. Heat, glare or a mirrored look.
  2. Glass compatibility check. Reflective films add heat stress to glass, so we check first.
  3. Spec sheet and quote. We quote it only if the glass passes.

Not the best fit for

  • Anyone who needs strong cell, GPS or Wi-Fi signal through the window.
  • Glass that fails the compatibility check.

Good to know

  • Metallic films contain a thin metal layer.
  • Glass breakage and seal failure are not covered by our film warranty. See the warranty page.

Exact specifications are on the spec sheet we share with your quote. The warranty length is named on your quote; see our warranty page.

How it is made

Inside a ThermaCore Reflective film

Reflective film gets its mirror look from a very thin layer of metal deposited on polyester in a vacuum chamber (sputtering), which is then laminated and coated to protect it. The metal layer bounces sunlight back off the glass.

See more about how film is made

Window film starts as optical-grade polyester (PET), a clear plastic made in very thin, even sheets. Coatings are added in layers: dyes or ceramic particles, thin metal or metal-oxide layers applied in vacuum chambers, and a scratch-resistant hard coat. A pressure-sensitive adhesive and a protective liner go on the other side. The layers are laminated and cured, then slit into rolls and checked for clarity, coating evenness and defects before they ship.

Specs to ask for

Numbers that matter when you compare

VLT

Visible light

VLT is the share of visible light that passes through. Higher is clearer and brighter. Ask for the visible reflectance outside and inside, as well as VLT and TSER.

TSER

Total solar energy rejected

TSER shows how much of the sun’s total energy the film blocks, including heat. Reflective films can be restricted by HOAs, landlords or local rules, so check before you choose.

UV

UV rejection

The share of ultraviolet rays blocked, which affects fading of floors, furniture and art.

SHGC

Solar heat gain

Lower SHGC means less solar heat enters the room. It applies to the whole window, so ask for the film-on-glass value.

Glass

Glass compatibility

Film suits some glass better than others. We check your glass type and any maker restrictions before we quote.

Warranty

What is covered

Ask for the film maker’s warranty and ours, including what each covers and for how long.

Exact figures come from the maker datasheet for the film we quote. We send the datasheet with your quote. Ask us and we will explain any number.

After install

Looking after it

Soft cloth, mild soap and a little patience in the first weeks keep this film clear for years.

Questions

Will you check my glass first?

Yes. Glass type matters, so we confirm the film suits your windows before we quote. If a film is not right for a window, we will say so.

Where do I find the exact specifications?

The manufacturer’s specification sheet for the exact film comes with your quote. We do not publish performance figures on this page, because they differ from roll to roll.

What does the warranty cover?

The warranty length is named on your quote. See our warranty page for the draft terms.

Can people see in at night?

The mirror effect works only when the outside is brighter. At night with lights on inside, people outside can see in. A privacy shade helps.

Will it affect my phone signal?

Metallised film can interfere with some signals. Ask us for a non-metallic option if that matters.
