Glass safety
ThermaCore Security: helps hold glass together
ThermaCore Security is a thicker, reinforced clear film that helps hold glass together if a pane breaks, from accidents or flying debris. It goes on the glass you already have and keeps a clear look.

- A common weak point for break-ins
- Film helps hold the glass together

- Large panes that take impacts
- Can be anchored to the frame

- Film holds shards in place
- Slows entry and limits flying glass
What “security film” means
Security (or safety) film is built from polyester layers bonded together with a strong, clear adhesive. It is thicker than standard window film. If the glass cracks, the film is designed to keep the broken pieces in one sheet instead of scattering across the room.
It helps in everyday accidents and when debris hits a window. It is not bulletproof, and it does not make glass unbreakable.

Where it fits
Ground-floor windows
Where a broken pane would worry you.
Doors and entries
Glass doors, sidelights and entry areas.
Busy homes
Rooms where accidents with glass can happen.
Clear look
Stays clear, so your view and light are kept.
Inside the film
Not to scale. Layers differ by manufacturer.
How it is made and fitted
- Layered polyester. Several clear polyester layers give the film its strength.
- Strong adhesive. A tough adhesive bonds the layers and the film to the glass.
- Hard coat. A thin scratch-resistant coating protects the surface during cleaning.
- Installation. We confirm at the glass check how the film should meet the edge of each pane.
Not the best fit for
- A substitute for impact-rated or laminated glass.
- A guarantee that glass will not break.
Good to know
- It helps hold broken glass together. It does not stop a pane from breaking.
- We check your glass first and may decline a film for a window.

How it is made
Inside a ThermaCore Security film
Security film is built from several layers of optical polyester laminated together with adhesive, then coated and slit to size. The extra thickness is what holds broken glass together, and thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch).
Window film starts as optical-grade polyester (PET), a clear plastic made in very thin, even sheets. Coatings are added in layers: dyes or ceramic particles, thin metal or metal-oxide layers applied in vacuum chambers, and a scratch-resistant hard coat. A pressure-sensitive adhesive and a protective liner go on the other side. The layers are laminated and cured, then slit into rolls and checked for clarity, coating evenness and defects before they ship.
Specs to ask for
Numbers that matter when you compare
Visible light
VLT is the share of visible light that passes through. Higher is clearer and brighter. Ask for the film thickness in mils and whether the film is rated for an anchoring system on the frame.
Total solar energy rejected
TSER shows how much of the sun’s total energy the film blocks, including heat. Security film is mainly about glass retention. Heat and glare control are secondary, so ask about the VLT and TSER if those matter too.
UV rejection
The share of ultraviolet rays blocked, which affects fading of floors, furniture and art.
Solar heat gain
Lower SHGC means less solar heat enters the room. It applies to the whole window, so ask for the film-on-glass value.
Glass compatibility
Film suits some glass better than others. We check your glass type and any maker restrictions before we quote.
What is covered
Ask for the film maker’s warranty and ours, including what each covers and for how long.
Exact figures come from the maker datasheet for the film we quote. We send the datasheet with your quote. Ask us and we will explain any number.
After install
Looking after it
Soft cloth, mild soap and a little patience in the first weeks keep this film clear for years.
Questions
What is security and safety film for?
It helps hold glass together if a pane breaks, from accidents or flying debris.
Will you check my glass first?
Yes. Glass type matters, so we confirm the film suits your windows before we quote. If a film is not right for a window, we will say so.
Where do I find the exact specifications?
The manufacturer’s specification sheet for the exact film comes with your quote. We do not publish performance figures on this page, because they differ from roll to roll.
What does the warranty cover?
The warranty length is named on your quote. See our warranty page for the draft terms.
Does security film make glass unbreakable?
No. The glass can still crack, but the film helps hold the pieces together so the pane is harder to get through.
Do I need frame anchoring?
Anchoring ties the film edge to the frame for extra holding strength. We tell you whether it suits your windows when we check them.
Can it go on double glazing?
Often yes, but we check the glass first.
