What “solar heat rejection” means

Sunlight carries energy as visible light, infrared (heat) and a little ultraviolet. A solar heat rejection film is built to reduce more of that energy than an everyday film. Films like this can be darker or more reflective than clear films, so the look matters as much as the numbers.

It suits glass that faces strong sun for hours each day, such as west and south walls.

Sun-facing glass

West and south windows with the most sun.

Hot rooms

Rooms that heat up in the afternoon.

How we handle it

  1. Tell us about the room. Which way it faces and what bothers you.
  2. Glass check. Strong solar films add heat stress to glass, so we confirm yours suits the film.
  3. Spec sheet. You see the manufacturer’s spec sheet before you decide.

Not the best fit for

  • Rooms where you want the clearest, lightest look, where ThermaCore Nano-Ceramic fits better.
  • Glass that fails the compatibility check.

Good to know

  • The look varies by roll, so ask for the spec sheet.
  • Not every window can take every film, which is why we check first.

Exact specifications are on the spec sheet we share with your quote. The warranty length is named on your quote; see our warranty page.

How it is made

Inside a ThermaCore Solar film

Solar control film uses dyed, metallised or ceramic layers, or a combination, to absorb and reflect solar energy before it warms the room. Different layer mixes trade off darkness, reflectivity, heat rejection and clarity.

See more about how film is made

Window film starts as optical-grade polyester (PET), a clear plastic made in very thin, even sheets. Coatings are added in layers: dyes or ceramic particles, thin metal or metal-oxide layers applied in vacuum chambers, and a scratch-resistant hard coat. A pressure-sensitive adhesive and a protective liner go on the other side. The layers are laminated and cured, then slit into rolls and checked for clarity, coating evenness and defects before they ship.

Specs to ask for

Numbers that matter when you compare

VLT

Visible light

VLT is the share of visible light that passes through. Higher is clearer and brighter. Ask for TSER and the shading coefficient or SHGC, which tell you how much solar heat gets through.

TSER

Total solar energy rejected

TSER shows how much of the sun’s total energy the film blocks, including heat. Also ask for the VLT so you know how dark the film will look from inside and outside.

UV

UV rejection

The share of ultraviolet rays blocked, which affects fading of floors, furniture and art.

SHGC

Solar heat gain

Lower SHGC means less solar heat enters the room. It applies to the whole window, so ask for the film-on-glass value.

Glass

Glass compatibility

Film suits some glass better than others. We check your glass type and any maker restrictions before we quote.

Warranty

What is covered

Ask for the film maker’s warranty and ours, including what each covers and for how long.

Exact figures come from the maker datasheet for the film we quote. We send the datasheet with your quote. Ask us and we will explain any number.

After install

Looking after it

Soft cloth, mild soap and a little patience in the first weeks keep this film clear for years.

Questions

Will you check my glass first?

Yes. Glass type matters, so we confirm the film suits your windows before we quote. If a film is not right for a window, we will say so.

Where do I find the exact specifications?

The manufacturer’s specification sheet for the exact film comes with your quote. We do not publish performance figures on this page, because they differ from roll to roll.

What does the warranty cover?

The warranty length is named on your quote. See our warranty page for the draft terms.

Will it make my rooms dark?

It depends on the film. Lighter options keep rooms bright, and you can see samples against your own glass.

Which windows benefit most?

West and south-facing glass in the afternoon usually gains the most.
